- Native, Naturalized or Agronomic? Do you really know what you are getting?Native SeedSome suppliers are selling seeds that they claim are native to various BC regions but in reality they only share the same Genus and species. Take for example Common No1 Forage Creeping Red Fescue, scientific name is Festuca rubra but if you planted it in the native red fescue grasslands of Douglas Lake it would most likely be a much different and likely invasive plant. Common seed is produced from fields that are either older, poor quality or surplass production of "Improved Cultivars", also know as "Named" or "Certified" (produced by genetic modification and/or slection and breeding). There can be literally 100's of Named cultivars, each with unique or improved characteristics for either turf or forage production and these varities still carry the scientific name of the parent plant (like Festuca rubra) and are not classified as sub species. Take actions to ensure you are getting what you want, specify the full scientific name and include the subspecies or forma whenever possible and ask you supplier to disclose the collection location and source when possible. Please contact us for native seeds appropriate to your site.
NaturalizedThe introduction of a species (taken out of it's native habitat) into the environment would be referred to as an "Introduced species". A species that has become established outside their native range and reproduce without human assistance and are not invasive or noxious to the environment are referrred to as "Naturalized", "established"or "wild non-native species". "Invasive species" are those introduced species that spread-widely or quickly, and cause harm, be that to the environment, human health, other valued resources or the economy. Although some argue that "Invasive" is a loaded word and harm is difficult to define, the fact of the matter is that organisms have and continue to be introduced to areas where they are not native, sometimes with, usually without, much regard to the harm that could result, at WSE we ensure all of our mixtures are not "Invasive". Take it one step further and contact us for a "Naturalized" ground cover mixture.
